PERSONAL AEROSOL SAMPLER
The Aero PS300 is a nanoparticle collector designed for health and occupational health nano-safety applications. A reduced flow rate version of the Aero Select, it can be worn by individuals requiring a portable aerosol sampler in order to risk assess exposure. Operating at a flow rate of 5 l/min, it comprises of a Nanocollector and a Cyclone head where larger particles are removed, and can be connected to a battery powered personal pump.
The Aero PS300 classifies aerosol particles in 5 stages according to size, ranging from 1 to 300nm. It contains an inertial deposition unit (Cyclone head) for collection of larger particles and a diffusion unit (Nanocollector) to collect particles in the nano-range.
The diffusion size-selective particle collector uses different types of nets with 50% cut-off diameters distributed equally over the required size range. This choice of net configuration has the advantage of requiring a much smaller number of nets per stage, making chemical analysis easier to perform and reducing the expense of purchasing fresh substrates.
The Cyclone head contains 3 cyclones and is designed to trap particles over a certain threshold. This cut-off diameter can be set between 200 to 1000nm, which is achieved by changing the number of cyclones in the head or by varying the sampling flow rate. Aerosol particles are drawn into the Cyclone head where particles greater than the cut-off aerodynamic diameter are collected due to inertial deposition. The flow emerging out of the Cyclone contains particles smaller than the cut-off size and these particles are collected by an array of different nets. A diffusion Nanocollector unit has been designed to collect particles sequentially in the size range between 1nm and the cut off diameter. In practice, it is achieved by selecting nets with certain fibre diameters, mesh openings, number of nets per stage and the flow velocity.
